Grammar is the art of putting words together rightly. It is the first of the
three roads because logic works upon statements, and a statement is made of words. This course
assumes none of it. It builds from the letter to the sentence, gives the traditional names as
they come, and asks at every step the question the medieval masters asked and we have mostly
stopped asking: why are the parts of speech what they are, and not something else?
